The year was 1976, and the rock band KISS was on the brink of releasing what would soon become their biggest hit song: “Beth.” This powerful rock ballad made its debut on the glam band’s fourth studio album, “Destroyer,” as the B-side to “Detroit Rock City.” To the surprise of many, the vocals on this track were performed by drummer Peter Criss, who also received credit as a co-writer alongside Bob Ezrin and Stan Penridge.
“Beth” quickly climbed the charts, reaching an impressive No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 and winning the People’s Choice Award for favorite New Song of 1976. Despite initial skepticism from his bandmates, Criss proudly claimed “Beth” as KISS’ biggest hit. In a statement shared on his official website, the now 80-year-old musician expressed his gratitude for the People’s Choice honor, emphasizing that the song’s enduring popularity has only grown with time.
However, in a January 2026 interview on the Professor of Rock podcast, KISS co-founder Gene Simmons offered a different perspective on the origins of “Beth.” He recounted a limo ride with Criss where the drummer began humming a melody, which ultimately led to the creation of the song. Simmons clarified that it was actually Stan Penridge who wrote “Beth,” with Criss providing the vocals and Ezrin adding the distinctive piano section.
Simmons emphasized that while Criss would always be considered family, it was important to set the record straight on the true history of the classic rock ballad. Penridge, unfortunately, passed away in 2001, further complicating the narrative surrounding the creation of “Beth.”
Even within the KISS band itself, questions have been raised about Criss’s role in writing “Beth.” Lead singer Paul Stanley once claimed that Criss could not have written the song, sparking a back-and-forth between bandmates about the true origins of the hit track.
Despite the controversy surrounding its creation, “Beth” remains a standout moment in the KISS discography. The song’s melodic structure, emotional depth, and timeless appeal have solidified its place as a rock classic, loved by fans across generations.
