Steven Spielberg Makes Generous Gesture in Response to James Van Der Beek’s Passing

Steven Spielberg made a generous and meaningful gesture in the wake of James Van Der Beek’s tragic passing. On February 12, Spielberg, along with his wife Kate Capshaw, donated $25,000 to a GoFundMe set up to support Van Der Beek’s wife, Kimberly, and their six children following the actor’s death from colorectal cancer on February 11.

The GoFundMe initially aimed to raise $250,000 but quickly exceeded expectations, reaching close to $2 million. Notable names like director Jon M. Chu and talent manager Guy Oseary also contributed, each donating $10,000. Producer Steven Levinson’s wife, Danielle Marquez Levinson, followed suit with a $10,000 donation. The Marla Maples Foundation contributed $5,000, while an anonymous donor pledged $30,000, currently the largest donation.

Van Der Beek, known for his role on Dawson’s Creek, had a special connection to Spielberg, who he idolized through his character Dawson Leery. Despite his absence at a cast reunion event due to illness, Van Der Beek expressed his gratitude to fans and colleagues through a heartfelt video message.

In November 2024, Van Der Beek shared his cancer diagnosis publicly, indicating that he was undergoing treatment and focusing on his health. His wife, Kim, announced his passing, noting his bravery and faith in his final days and asking for privacy as they grieve the loss of a devoted husband, father, son, brother, and friend.

Van Der Beek leaves behind his wife and their six children, Olivia, Joshua, Annabel, Emilia, Gwendolyn, and Jeremiah. Steven Spielberg’s generous donation and the outpouring of support from the community demonstrate the impact Van Der Beek had on those around him and the love and respect he inspired.
