In a somber moment for fans of classic rock, the passing of Tetsu Yamauchi, renowned bassist for Free and the Faces, has left a void in the music world. At 79 years old, his legacy lives on through his iconic contributions to rock music.
Originating from Fukuoka, Japan, Yamauchi’s musical journey began with the release of two albums, “Kappa” and “Samurai,” in 1971 as a member of Micky Curtis & The Samurais. Transitioning to the British rock scene, he collaborated with Free guitarist Paul Kossoff and drummer Simon Kirke, alongside keyboardist John Bundrick, forming the legendary quartet known as “Kossoff, Kirke, Tetsu & Rabbit” during Free’s hiatus in the early ’70s.
After becoming a permanent member of Free and participating in the recording of their final album, “Heartbreaker,” Yamauchi seamlessly transitioned to join the Faces, replacing Ronnie Lane. His versatile skill set is exemplified in his involvement in the creation of the band’s hit single, “You Can Make Me Dance, Sing or Anything,” known for its lengthy title, which remains a milestone in British chart history.
Yamauchi’s musical journey extended beyond his time with these iconic bands, delving into a solo career with two albums, “Tetsu” and “Kikyou.” Embracing his cultural roots, he later formed the Tetsu Yamauchi & the Good Times Roll Band in Japan, captivating audiences with his dynamic performances.
Despite opting for a low-profile lifestyle in his later years, Yamauchi made a surprise return to the stage in 2023 and 2024, reuniting with drummer Yoshitaka Shimada for a nostalgic revival of their past musical endeavors. His enduring influence on the rock music landscape is a testament to his unparalleled talent and unwavering passion for the art form.
As we bid farewell to a true musical trailblazer, Tetsu Yamauchi’s legacy continues to resonate with fans worldwide, leaving an indelible mark on the rock music scene.
