Remembering Greg Brown: A Tribute to the Founding Member of Cake

The music world recently mourned the loss of Greg Brown, a founding member of the 90s slacker rock band Cake. Known for hits like “The Distance,” “Frank Sinatra,” and “Short Skirt, Long Jacket,” Greg’s passing was announced by the band on Feb. 7.

Cake took to Instagram to share the sad news, stating, “It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of Greg Brown’s passing after a brief illness. Greg was an integral part of CAKE’s early sound and development. His creative contributions were immense, and his presence—both musical and personal—will be deeply missed. Godspeed, Greg.”

Fans of the beloved guitarist expressed their grief, with Greg’s daughter, Adri Brown, describing him as “the best dad I could’ve asked for.” Another fan reflected, “One of the greatest guitar players, in my personal opinion. He will live on in the history he’s made and the musicians he’s inspired.”

Greg Brown played a pivotal role in Cake’s success, co-founding the band in 1991 alongside singer John McCrea, bassist Shon Meckfessel, drummer Frank French, and trumpeter Vince DiFiore. He was the sole writer behind the band’s biggest hit, “The Distance,” which catapulted them to mainstream success. The song, recorded in one take, reached the top of the alternative rock charts and is certified 2x Platinum by the RIAA.

Following his departure from Cake in 1997, Greg Brown continued to make music with bands like Deathray and Homie. Despite some tumultuous times, Greg later reconciled with his former bandmates, even collaborating on Cake’s 2011 album, Showroom of Compassion.

In the world of music, Greg Brown’s legacy lives on through his incredible talent and contributions to Cake’s iconic sound. His unique style and unforgettable music will continue to inspire generations to come.
