Rascal Flatts Reflects on 20 Years of Chart-Topping Hits

As Rascal Flatts celebrates the 20th anniversary of their breakthrough album “Me and My Gang,” bassist and backing vocalist Jay DeMarcus reflects on the monumental impact of their hits “What Hurts The Most” and “Life Is A Highway.” The country band, formed in 1999 by DeMarcus, lead vocalist Gary LeVox, and guitarist Joe Don Rooney, had already tasted success on the country charts with their 2004 hit “Bless The Broken Road.” However, it was “What Hurts The Most,” the lead single from their 2006 album, that catapulted them to mainstream stardom.

DeMarcus reminisces on the fateful decision to record the song, originally cut by Mark Wills and passed on by Keith Urban, under the guidance of acclaimed producer Dan Huff. The serendipitous choice paid off, as the song became a standout moment in the band’s career. The success of “What Hurts The Most” was followed by the unexpected opportunity to cover Tom Cochran’s 1991 hit “Life Is a Highway” for the animated film Cars. Despite initial skepticism, Rascal Flatts’ rendition of the song became a massive hit, solidifying their status as one of the biggest acts of 2006.

The band’s journey to Grammy-winning success was not without its challenges, as DeMarcus recalls moments of doubt and uncertainty when faced with pivotal decisions. However, their perseverance and willingness to take risks ultimately paid off, leading to the incredible achievement of being the best-selling artist of the year. DeMarcus fondly remembers a poignant moment shared with LeVox at the Grammys, where they realized the magnitude of their success in the presence of music legends like Beyonce, Jay-Z, and Elton John.

This milestone anniversary serves as a testament to Rascal Flatts’ enduring impact on the music industry and their ability to connect with audiences on a profound level. As they look back on two decades of chart-topping hits and unforgettable performances, the band continues to inspire listeners with their timeless music and unwavering dedication to their craft. In a world where trends come and go, Rascal Flatts remains a timeless musical force, leaving a lasting legacy that transcends generations.
