Speeding at over 100 miles per hour, Olympic gold medalist Sha’Carri Richardson found herself in hot water with the law once again. The Orange County Corrections Department and Sheriff’s Department in Orlando, Florida confirmed the track and field star’s arrest on a charge of dangerous excessive speeding on Thursday, Jan. 29.
Driving at a staggering 104 miles per hour on SR 429 near Stoneybrook Parkway, Richardson was not only speeding but was also dangerously tailgating and crossing lanes to pass other motorists, according to the Sheriff’s Department. Released on a $500 bond, Richardson is scheduled for a court appearance on Feb. 26.
This incident comes on the heels of Richardson’s arrest and charge of fourth-degree domestic violence assault six months prior, stemming from an altercation with her boyfriend and fellow track and field athlete, Christian Coleman. Despite the charges, Coleman chose not to press charges, stating he “declined to be a victim.” Richardson took to her Instagram Story to apologize for the incident, expressing regret for her actions and appreciation for the love Coleman had shown her.
In 2021, Richardson faced controversy after testing positive for THC during a drug test, leading to her suspension from the sport and inability to participate in the Tokyo Olympics. Despite the setback, Richardson made a triumphant return in 2024, winning a gold medal as part of Team USA’s 4x100m relay and a silver in the individual 100m event in Paris.
While Richardson has faced her share of obstacles, her determination and skill have solidified her as a force to be reckoned with in the world of track and field. While her recent encounters with the law have raised eyebrows, her return to the Olympic stage proves that she is a true competitor with the grit and talent to overcome any challenge in her path.
