In a surprising turn of events, after years of legal battles, a development has emerged in Las Vegas, Nevada surrounding the estate of former NFL star O.J. Simpson. Following his death in April 2024, his estate has officially accepted a multimillion-dollar creditor claim from Fred Goldman, the father of murder victim Ron Goldman, who was killed alongside Nicole Brown Simpson in 1994.
The claim stems from a 1997 civil suit where Simpson was found liable for the deaths of Brown Simpson and Goldman, leading to a civil jury awarding the families over $33 million in a wrongful death suit. Despite this verdict, Simpson avoided paying much of the owed amount throughout his life. Attorney David Cook, representing Fred Goldman, described Simpson as unwilling to pay a dime to the family.
After years of unsuccessful attempts to obtain money from NFL pensions or Simpson’s trusts, Fred formally submitted a creditor claim in July 2024 to the Nevada probate court, requesting nearly $58 million to account for three decades of accumulated interest.
The acceptance of the claim by the estate’s executor, Malcolm LaVergne, marks a significant step towards satisfying the outstanding judgment. LaVergne noted that while the initial claim exceeded $117 million, he aims to work with Fred Goldman to calculate a more accurate amount.
Looking ahead, the estate plans to pay off creditors before distributing any remaining funds to heirs through the auctioning of assets. LaVergne highlighted efforts to recover stolen items from the estate and mentioned seeking advice from Ron Goldman on managing the estate.
Attorney Michaelle Rafferty of Maupin, Cox & LeGoy, representing the Goldman family, emphasized that the executor’s acceptance of the claim acknowledges the debt but does not constitute payment. Monitoring the probate process, she looks forward to the next phase of the longstanding pursuit.
