Meet Charli XCX, the Pop Star Behind the ‘Brat Girl Summer’ Trend

Charli XCX, whose real name is Charlotte Emma Aitchison, is a British singer-songwriter who has been making music for over a decade.

She recently released a remix album, expanding on her career that began when she started writing music at age 14 and posted her songs on MySpace. Discovered by a promoter, she signed with Asylum Records in 2010, releasing her debut album, True Romance, in 2013.

Charli’s breakthrough came in 2014 with her hit single “Boom Clap,” followed by other hits like “Doing It” with Rita Ora, “1999” with Troye Sivan, and “Apple,” which inspired a viral dance trend. Her sixth album, brat, released in June 2024, has already gone Gold. She’s now launching the remix album Brat and It’s Completely Different but Also Still Brat, featuring artists like Lorde, Billie Eilish, Ariana Grande, and The 1975.

This November, Charli will kick off her brat 2024 Arena Tour, performing in cities including Manchester, London, Birmingham, and Glasgow. She’s also the face of Kim Kardashian’s SKIMS cotton collection. Charli has penned hits for other artists as well, such as Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello’s “Señorita,” Selena Gomez’s “Same Old Love,” and Icona Pop’s “I Love It.”

Her stage name originated from her old MSN Messenger username. Though she doesn’t have her own Bratz doll, the brand recreated one of her music videos with Billie Eilish. Charli also joked about performing at the 2024 Paris Olympics Closing Ceremony—but that turned out to be just a prank.
