Mean Girls

Mean Girls, the iconic 2004 teen comedy written by Rosalind Wiseman and Tina Fey and directed by Mark Waters, continues to hold a special place in our hearts. The limit truly does not exist when it comes to the number of times we’ve streamed, quoted, and referenced this timeless film that cleverly takes on high school hierarchy.

In a recent podcast interview with Chicks in the Office, Rachel McAdams, who played Regina George, the head of the popular Plastics, shared a behind-the-scenes secret. She revealed that she actually auditioned for the role of Lindsay Lohan’s character, Cady Heron. However, director Mark Waters felt she was too old for the part, noting the age gap between McAdams, who was 26 at the time, and Lohan, who was just 17.

Interestingly, Waters also originally wanted Lohan to play Regina, citing her energy and strong personality as a perfect fit for the role. Despite the casting challenges, McAdams eventually found her way to playing the iconic mean girl, bringing a sense of power and maturity to the character.

Filming Mean Girls was a unique experience for McAdams, as the movie was shot right in her backyard in Toronto. She lived close to the high school featured in the film, allowing her to easily roll out of bed and walk over to work each day. It’s these little details that make the movie even more special to fans.

As McAdams’ new survival thriller, Send Help, hits theaters, it’s clear that her journey from almost playing Cady to ultimately embodying Regina has been a fascinating one. The age dynamics in casting decisions like these may always raise eyebrows, but in the end, it’s the performances and the lasting impact of films like Mean Girls that truly matter.
