Lagos State Government Implements New Traffic Safety Measures

The Lagos State Government has announced a new initiative to reinstate psychiatric assessments for traffic offenders as a way to promote road safety and discipline.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation shared this plan during the second Lagos Traffic Conference, coinciding with the 25th anniversary of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA). In addition to the psychiatric evaluations, LASTMA officers are set to undergo international training to improve their effectiveness in managing traffic.

The agency is also working on a 20-year blueprint to implement a technology-driven traffic system, including the use of Information Technology Systems (ITS) for real-time monitoring and enforcement of traffic behaviour.

One of the key focuses is on compiling data on traffic incidents to support government planning and decision-making. The aim of these measures is not just to generate revenue but primarily to protect lives and property on the roads.

As part of the anniversary celebrations, the agency received praise for its efforts in traffic management in Nigeria and was encouraged to deepen collaboration with private transport operators.

The Bureau of Public Enterprises pledged its support to help achieve Lagos State’s vision of a smarter and safer city. These initiatives are part of a larger effort to improve traffic management in Lagos and ensure the safety of all road users.
