KISS: From Rock to Ballads

In the 1970s, the band KISS was renowned for their hard rock sound and bold glam persona, but everything changed with a single ballad in 1976. In a recent interview with Gene Simmons, founding member of KISS, he revealed how the release of the song “Beth” led to some unexpected confusion with an iconic English singer. Originally the B-side to “Detroit Rock City,” “Beth” was performed by drummer Peter Criss, who had a raspy voice reminiscent of rock legend Rod Stewart, leading to immediate comparisons.

Simmons explained how “Beth” became a surprising hit for the hard rock band, reaching No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 and winning a People’s Choice Award for Favorite New Song of 1976. The unexpected success of the song opened up new opportunities for KISS, allowing them to win awards and sell out shows.

Exploring further into KISS’s musical journey, co-founder Paul Stanley shared the inspiration behind the song “Hard Luck Woman,” which was influenced by Rod Stewart’s work. Originally intending to give the song to Stewart, Stanley and the band decided to record it themselves in order to follow up on the success of “Beth.” The use of a raspy voice by Peter Criss and a 12-string acoustic guitar helped “Hard Luck Woman” capture the essence of a Rod Stewart song.

Despite initial disagreements over the vocals, “Hard Luck Woman” became a standout track on KISS’s album “Rock and Roll Over,” reaching No. 15 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1977. The influence of artists like Rod Stewart on KISS’s music showcased the band’s versatility and ability to adapt to different styles while maintaining their signature hard rock sound.

In the ever-evolving world of music, KISS’s exploration of new sounds and musical influences continues to captivate audiences and push boundaries within the industry. Their ability to blend rock with emotional ballads like “Beth” and “Hard Luck Woman” demonstrates the band’s enduring impact on the music scene, solidifying their place as pioneers in rock and roll history.
