Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert is facing criticism from fans after an on-air interaction with ESPN reporter Laura Rutledge following his team’s overtime win against the Philadelphia Eagles.
In a viral video, viewers witnessed Herbert attempting to avoid a post-game interview with Rutledge, walking away as she tried to ask him questions. Despite initially stating he wanted to celebrate with his team, Herbert eventually stopped to answer a few brief questions from Rutledge.
During the interview, Rutledge asked Herbert about the game-sealing interception, his feelings after being tackled multiple times, and his thoughts on the team’s ability to secure the win. Herbert praised his defense’s performance and expressed his pride in being part of the team.
After the interview, the ESPN studio hosts commended Rutledge for her handling of the situation. However, social media users called out Herbert for what they perceived as rudeness and unprofessional behavior during the post-game interview.
While some fans acknowledged the perceived pointlessness of post-game interviews, they still believed Herbert could have handled the situation with more grace and professionalism.
Despite the backlash, Herbert has not publicly addressed the controversy surrounding the interview. The Los Angeles Chargers are scheduled to play the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday, Dec. 14 at 1 p.m. ET.
