Is MySpace making a comeback?

Once the reigning champion of social media platforms, MySpace may be on the brink of a resurgence over 25 years after its peak. Fans have been clamoring for the return of the platform’s original founder, the beloved “MySpace Tom” Anderson. On January 28, Anderson finally responded to their pleas with an unexpected twist.

In a post on Threads, Anderson challenged his fans: “Ok – take me to 1 million thread followers. Show me you care and we will talk MySpace.” Alongside this call to action, he included a nostalgic, sparkly image macro that reads “thanks for the add!”

With only three posts on his Threads page, Anderson’s return to the social media scene has sparked a frenzy among nostalgic MySpace devotees. Dissatisfied with the likes of Meta-operated Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok, fans have begun flooding Anderson’s older posts with requests for a rejuvenation of the platform.

The outpouring of support for MySpace’s revival has not gone unnoticed. Anderson’s latest post has garnered nearly 15,000 likes and over 2,000 comments in less than a day. Fans are fervently rallying behind the idea of a MySpace renaissance, with one commenter exclaiming, “MILLENNIALSSSSSSSSS ASSEMBLEEEEEEEE!!!” and another pledging to ditch Instagram and Threads if MySpace makes a comeback.

As of now, Anderson boasts a following of nearly 190,000 followers on Threads.

While MySpace’s heyday may have waned with the rise of Facebook, Anderson’s business acumen remains unquestionable. Having sold the platform to News Corp. for $580 million just two years after its launch, Anderson exited the scene at the age of 30 in 2009.

Today, Anderson can be found living a life of leisure and exploration, as seen on his Instagram profile where he describes himself as the “Former 1st friend.” His interests range from music and architecture to golf and interior design, showcasing a life rich in experiences.

In his role as a venture capitalist and investor, Anderson continues to be involved with cutting-edge technologies such as AI and Elon Musk’s SpaceX. With a bio that proudly proclaims him as a “CRISPR Investr,” Anderson’s pioneering spirit and forward-thinking approach continue to shape his post-MySpace endeavors.

The question remains: as MySpace fans clamor for a resurrection of the iconic platform, will Anderson heed their call and bring back a piece of digital history? Only time will tell.
