Taylor was a prolific songwriter who wrote hits like “Angel of the Morning,” a song originally recorded by Evie Sands and later popularized by Juice Newton in the 1980s. His music career also included writing songs like “He Sits at Your Table” for Willie Nelson and “I Can’t Let Go” for artists like Evie Sands, the Hollies, and Linda Ronstadt.
Throughout his career, Taylor not only wrote songs for other artists but also released his own music. His first song, “Here I Am,” was released in 1962. Additionally, Taylor founded his own record label, Train Wreck Records, which showcased a variety of music genres, including folk and country.
Born James Wesley Voight, Taylor was the younger brother of actor Jon Voight and the uncle of actress Angelina Jolie. He led a quiet life in New York City with his late wife, Joan Carole Frey, who passed away in June 2025. Taylor is survived by his two children, son James and daughter Kelly, as well as his three grandchildren, Riley, Samantha, and Kate.
