Google’s Android Settles Class Action Lawsuit for $135 Million

As you reach for your phone, the device that holds your entire world within its sleek frame, chances are it’s not an iPhone, but rather an Android that rests in your pocket. The familiarity of this operating system, with its multitude of users around the world, is undeniable.

Recently, whispers have spread among tech-savvy consumers regarding a class action lawsuit Google has been embroiled in. The crux of the matter? Allegations that Google utilized Android devices to transfer information without user consent, draining cellular data in the process. However, this chapter seems to have come to a close with the corporation agreeing to a substantial $135 million settlement to put these claims to rest.

The settlement is a victory for consumers who have relied on Android devices to surf the internet through cellular data networks since November 12, 2017. Those who are not part of a similar ongoing lawsuit, Csupo v. Google LLC, also stand to benefit from this resolution.

Under the terms of the settlement, eligible class members will receive a cash payment. The payout amount will vary based on the number of participants and the cellular data expenses each member incurred while using Android devices. Approximately 100 million class members are expected to share in the settlement fund, although exact payment details have yet to be disclosed.

According to the class action lawsuit, Google’s Android system allegedly conducted unauthorized information transfers to Google servers, even when the devices were idle. This occurred irrespective of user permissions, with the transfers notoriously consuming cellular data instead of utilizing Wi-Fi connections.

Google has not admitted any wrongdoing in this matter. The $135 million settlement serves as a way to address the allegations and provide compensation for the unauthorized use of cellular data by Google.

The deadline for exclusion or objection to the settlement is set for May 29, 2026. A final approval hearing for the settlement is scheduled for June 23, 2026, marking a pivotal moment in this legal saga where consumers may finally see some resolution.
