Embracing Quiet Confidence

When contemplating the idea of confidence, the mind often drifts to images of powerful CEOs or all-star athletes basking in their own greatness. Celebrating one’s worth with literal or figurative chest pounds and fist bumps is a positive thing. Believing in oneself is important. However, psychologists suggest that it is possible to exude certainty in oneself in a more subtle manner, known as “quiet confidence.”

“Quiet confidence is not loud or showy,” explains Dr. Ernesto Lira de la Rosa, a psychologist and media advisor for the Hope for Depression Research Foundation. “It is a steady belief in yourself that does not need to be announced. People with quiet confidence are comfortable in their own skin, even when faced with uncertainty.”

Individuals with quiet confidence do not boast or showboat. Instead, they exude a different kind of self-assurance. They listen as much as they speak and use specific phrases when they do speak. Psychologists agree on 17 phrases commonly used by those with quiet confidence.

1. “I don’t know.”
2. “I’m willing to try.”
3. “Let me think about that. I will get back to you.”
4. “I can’t take that on right now.”
5. “No.”
6. “I need a break.”
7. “I’m comfortable in my decision.”
8. “Let’s work together.”
9. “I see it differently.”
10. “I’m disappointed.”
11. “Thank you for telling me.”
12. “I made a mistake. Let me fix it.”
13. “I’m having a hard time with this right now.”
14. “I can handle this.”
15. “I’m proud of what I did there.”
16. “I have learned to trust myself.”
17. “I know who I am.”

One phrase that people with quiet confidence never use is “I’m the best at this” or “I am better than everyone else.” This kind of boasting or declaring superiority goes against the nature of quiet confidence. Those with quiet confidence focus on their actions, reliability, and expertise speaking for themselves rather than making bold claims.

In a world where confidence is often equated with loudness and showiness, quiet confidence stands out for its understated nature and steady belief in oneself. It is a trait that allows individuals to navigate challenges and decisions with poise and self-assurance, without the need for grand declarations.
