Not being a scientist, my knowledge still begins and ends with the iconic David Bowie. Moviegoers were recently reminded of this connection when the rock legend graced the big screen in director Nicolas Roeg’s visually stunning sci-fi classic, “The Man Who Fell to Earth.”
Premiering in London in 1976, the film transformed the Leicester Square Theatre into a center of glamour, stardom, and cosmic intrigue. As the humanoid alien Thomas Jerome Newton, Bowie’s acting debut was hailed as “sublime” and “iconic” by critics, as he navigated Earth’s temptations of greed, corruption, and lust in his quest to save his dying planet.
While Bowie starred in the film, the musical responsibilities fell to John Phillips of The Mamas & the Papas and Japanese percussionist-composer Stomu Yamash’ta. The resulting soundtrack was a critical success, described as “a freaky, compelling concept album of a film.”
Originally, the film had a completely different sound, as revealed by film editor Graeme Clifford, who initially scored it with Pink Floyd’s 1973 album, “The Dark Side of the Moon.” Despite the initial struggles, the film eventually achieved cult classic status, establishing Bowie as a serious film actor rather than just a rock star in a role.
Interestingly, the movie was not an immediate commercial success, failing to cover its $1.5 million budget at the box office. However, like other belatedly celebrated classics, Bowie’s breakthrough continued to gain popularity over the years.
Filmed in Roswell, New Mexico, the art-house masterpiece has stood the test of time. Inspired by the film, a 2022 episodic series starring Chiwetel Ejiofor was nominated for a Primetime Emmy but was canceled after one season. Nonetheless, Bowie’s performance in the original film is now being recognized as a forgotten sci-fi classic that still resonates today.
“The Man Who Fell to Earth” remains a timeless piece of cinematic history, showcasing Bowie’s versatility and talent beyond the music world. Available to rent or buy on Prime Video, the film continues to captivate audiences with its otherworldly charm and Bowie’s unforgettable performance.
