CNN and Turner Broadcasting System Founder Ted Turner Passes Away at 87

CNN and Turner Broadcasting System founder, Ted Turner, has passed away at the age of 87. Known for pioneering the 24-hour news landscape with CNN, Turner died peacefully on Wednesday surrounded by his family. Mark Thompson, Chairman and CEO of CNN Worldwide, described Turner as an intensely committed leader who trusted his own judgement and left a lasting impact on the world.

In September of 2018, Turner revealed that he was battling Lewy body dementia, a brain disorder affecting cognitive functions. Despite a hospitalization in early 2025 for pneumonia, Turner recovered and continued to inspire those around him. He is survived by his five children, 14 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

A true visionary, Turner began his career in the billboard industry before venturing into radio and television. His groundbreaking idea of a 24-hour news network, CNN, was initially met with skepticism but ultimately changed the media landscape forever. Turner’s determination and foresight led to the launch of CNN on June 1, 1980.

While Turner’s legacy in the media world is well-known, his personal life also made headlines. He married actress Jane Fonda in 1991, and though the couple divorced in 2001, they remained close until his passing. Fonda, in her own reflections, praised Turner for his kind heart and philanthropic efforts, believing in his place in heaven.

In the midst of loss, the world remembers Ted Turner as a trailblazing figure who revolutionized news media and left an indelible mark on society. His vision and impact on CNN and beyond will continue to resonate for years to come.
