Cher: Rising from Rejection

In a pivotal moment of rejection, director Mike Nichols once delivered a cutting blow to a budding Cher when she sought his guidance on breaking into acting post-music career. The iconic singer, formerly known for her work alongside Sonny in the Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour, yearned to shed her TV persona and transition into the realm of serious acting — a leap Nichols believed she couldn’t quite make.

Recalling the scathing encounter on The Howard Stern Show, Cher described how she and David Geffen attempted to secure an audition through well-connected friends, only to be met with closed doors at every turn. Turning to Nichols in a final bid for a chance, she confidently approached him about auditioning for a role in an upcoming film. Nichols, however, bluntly informed her that she simply didn’t fit the bill, crushing her hopes with a single sentence.

Despite the setback, Cher’s fiery determination burned brighter than ever. Undeterred by Nichols’ skepticism, she boldly declared her talent and vowed he would one day regret his refusal. Her fierce resolve eventually paid off when Nichols granted her an audition for The Fortune in 1975, although she was ultimately not cast. However, her breakthrough moment arrived in 1983 when she landed the role of Dolly Pelliker in the acclaimed film Silkwood, earning her a Golden Globe and an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress.

In the wake of Silkwood’s success, Cher embarked on a stellar acting career that would see her star in over 20 feature films, delivering unforgettable performances in hits like Moonstruck, The Witches of Eastwick, Burlesque, and Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again. Her talent was undeniable, culminating in an Oscar win for Best Actress in Moonstruck in 1988, alongside a Golden Globe for The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour in 1974 and another Best Actress win for Moonstruck in 1988.

While Nichols may have been a formidable critic, Cher found solace in the support of other industry figures like director Francis Ford Coppola and actress Shelley Winters, who championed her aspirations and encouraged her to pursue her dreams in acting. Winters’ advice to “get your ass to New York” proved to be a pivotal moment in Cher’s journey to becoming the acclaimed actress she is today.
