Chelsea Striker Sam Kerr and West Ham’s Kristie Mewis Expecting Their First Child

In a heartwarming announcement, Chelsea’s star forward Sam Kerr and West Ham midfielder Kristie Mewis have revealed they are expecting their first child together. The news was shared on Kerr’s Instagram account with a post that read, “Mewis-Kerr baby coming 2025!” The couple confirmed that Mewis will be carrying the baby.

West Ham congratulated the pair, posting on Instagram, “A huge congratulations to Kristie and her partner Sam, who have announced they are expecting their first child.”

Sporting Powerhouses

Kerr, 31, is widely regarded as one of Australia’s greatest footballers and holds the record as the nation’s all-time leading goal scorer. She has enjoyed immense success at Chelsea, clinching five consecutive Women’s Super League titles, three FA Cups, two League Cups, and a Community Shield. Despite a knee ligament injury that has sidelined her since January, Kerr signed a two-year contract extension in June, solidifying her commitment to the club.

Meanwhile, Mewis, 33, is a key player for West Ham, having joined the club in December from NJ/NY Gotham FC. The USA international has earned 53 caps for her country, further showcasing her impact on and off the field.

Homophobic Reactions Mar the Celebration

While the couple’s announcement received widespread support, it was unfortunately met with a wave of homophobic comments on social media, prompting swift condemnation from fans and advocacy groups.

Chelsea Pride, an LGBTQ+ supporters’ group, called out the hate in a statement on X (formerly Twitter), saying, “Homophobia has no place in football, at Chelsea, or in our society. It’s heartbreaking and infuriating to see social media flooded with hateful comments when we should be celebrating love, pride, and unity.”

The group noted that Chelsea had to disable comments and remove posts due to the backlash, vowing to stand firm against discrimination. “We fight for a football world where every player, fan, and family can live openly and be celebrated, without fear or prejudice,” they added.

Off the pitch, Kerr faces a court appearance in February, having pleaded not guilty to a charge of racially aggravated harassment of a police officer in London earlier this year. Despite these challenges, the couple’s baby news marks a joyous milestone in their personal lives and reflects their strength and resilience as public figures.
