Chef Michael Elegbede & Friends: A special relief dinner held at 788 On The Sea for the victims of the Otedola Bridge fire

Chef Michael Elegbede is delighted to announce in collaboration with 788 On the Sea a special relief dinner for the victims of the Otedola Bridge Fire. The dinner is scheduled to hold on the 28th July at 7pm at 788 on the Sea.

On 28th June 2018 a fuel tanker exploded during rush hour on Otedola Bridge, Lagos Nigeria. The official death toll stands at 12 with scores of others injured in the engulfing fire that ensued. However, the adverse effects; be they physical, emotional and psychological continue to be felt, with many victims in dire need of support both medically and financially. It is these present realities that precipitated Chef Elegbede to act. Reaching out across his extensive network of friends and colleagues within the food industry, he partnered with newly opened fine-dining restaurant 788 On The Sea, Lekki , whose management have generously provided their space as the location for the relief dinner. Suppliers and producers across the food chain have also offered to lend a hand, providing the principal ingredients from which the chefs will create the menu.

Ever the pioneering force in the industry, the dinner is the first of its kind in Nigeria and Chef Elegbede has used his convening power to assemble a team consisting of nine of Nigeria’s leading chefs to prepare a nine course tasting dinner with proceeds going to those gravely affected by the Otedola Fire.

The assembled team cuts across cuisines, culture and specialism but is united by a passion for using their respective skills in food as not only a gateway to gastronomic excellence but also as a means to create positive impact on a micro and macro level.

The chefs participating are: Chef Alex Oke of XO Bakery, Chef Benedict Okuzo, Chef Christian Duhalde of La Taverna, Chef Uzo Umeh of El Padrino, Chef Ozoz Sokoh of Kitchen Butterfly, Chef Imoteda Aladekomo of Heels in the Kitchen, Chef Eros of Cookie Jar, Chef Atim Ukoh of Afrolems and finally Chef Michael Elegbede himself.
“We are all committed to the culinary arts. We have a wealth of knowledge and talent. But most of all we have a love of Nigeria. We feel what we are doing here, as members of the food industry, in coming together and working collaboratively is something we can see in other industries too. By creating this dining experience, and raising money for those who need it most, we hope in a small way to show the change that we can all be part of when we come together.”, said Chef Elegbede at a brunch held for the
steering committee and the chef participants.

Coordinating the Operations and Communications for the event are media personality, fashion consortium founder and inclusivity campaigner Latasha Ngwube and noted editor and writer Mazzi Odu. Both women are long time supporters of the food industry and are particularly moved and inspired by this philanthropic initiative.
