Carly Simon: Grammy Award-Winning Best New Artist

54 years ago, the Grammys recognized a rising star in the music industry by awarding them the title of Best New Artist. On March 14, 1972, the prestigious award went to the legendary singer-songwriter Carly Simon at the 14th Annual Grammy Awards. This honor came after the release of her debut album in 1971, which featured the breakout hit “That’s The Way I’ve Always Heard It Should Be.”

At just 28 years old, Simon triumphed over competitors Chase, Bill Withers, Emerson, Lake and Palmer, and Hamilton, Joe Frank & Reynolds to claim the Best New Artist title. Despite her young age, Simon was already making waves in the music world with her soulful voice and poignant lyrics.

The 1972 Grammy Awards marked the beginning of Simon’s successful career, earning her the first two of her 15 Grammy nominations and her first win. It was a sign of the greatness that was yet to come for this talented artist. In 1999, Simon would go on to win her second Grammy for Best Song Written Specifically For A Motion Picture Or Television for “Let the River Run” from the film Working Girl.

Following her early success, Simon released her third studio album, No Secrets, later in 1972. The album featured her signature hit, “You’re So Vain”, which solidified her status as a superstar. The song spent three weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1973 and received three Grammy nominations, including Song of the Year, Record of the Year, and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.

“You’re So Vain” remains one of Simon’s most iconic songs and has been recognized as one of the greatest songs of all time by Rolling Stone. Alongside this hit, Simon’s singles “Mockingbird” (1974), “Nobody Does It Better” (1977), and “Jesse” (1980) have also achieved Gold certification from the RIAA.

Carly Simon’s legacy as a groundbreaking artist and songwriter continues to resonate with music lovers around the world. Her ability to touch hearts and minds through her music is a testament to her enduring talent and impact on the industry.
