Bear Attacks on the Rise in Japan: Three Dead in One Week

A recent spike in bear attacks in Japan has left three individuals dead within a week. The incidents include a man in his 70s who was found dead after going into the woods to harvest mushrooms, another man whose head was separated from his torso, and a 78-year-old man with claw marks on his body. Unfortunately, bear attacks are not uncommon in Japan, with 103 people suffering bear injuries between April and September 2025.

In a separate incident, a bear entered a supermarket in Gunma prefecture, injuring two men. The bear reportedly charged through the aisles, causing panic among shoppers. Despite the terrifying experience, both men sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

Experts attribute the increase in bear encounters to factors such as climate change and population decline in certain regions. Since April, six people have lost their lives due to bear attacks, raising concerns about the safety of residents in bear-populated areas.
