In a recent turn of events, the Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) made a decision to lift the lifetime ban on a passenger, Ms. Comfort Emmanson, who was previously sanctioned for disruptive behavior on a flight with Ibom Air. This decision came after an appeal by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo.
The AON spokesperson, Professor Obiora Okonkwo, highlighted the importance of considering factors such as remorse, withdrawal of complaints, dropped charges, and release from custody in making this decision. The Federal Government has also proposed a retreat to retrain Aviation Security (AVSEC) personnel and airline crew on handling unruly passengers, emphasizing the need for public awareness about the legal consequences of such behavior under the Civil Aviation Act.
Unruly conduct, which includes actions like threatening crew members, ignoring safety instructions, or tampering with aircraft equipment, is strictly prohibited. Pilots-in-command and AVSEC officers have the authority to remove disruptive passengers from flights to ensure the safety of everyone on board.
The AON reiterated its commitment to working with aviation agencies to maintain order and safety in flight operations.
