In a shocking new lawsuit, Amy Griffin, author of Oprah’s Book Club pick “The Tell,” is facing accusations of using a former classmate’s sexual assault story as her own. The memoir, published in March 2025, details Griffin’s recovery of repressed memories of childhood sexual abuse during illegal psychedelic-drug therapy.
Despite the book’s success as Oprah’s 112th book club pick and a New York Times bestseller, Griffin is now embroiled in legal trouble. On March 4th, a lawsuit was filed by a former classmate identified as Jane Doe, who claims her “identity, likeness, and private information” were unlawfully used in the memoir. The classmate alleges invasion of privacy, negligence, and infliction of emotional distress against Griffin, ghostwriter Sam Lansky, as well as Penguin Random House and The Dial Press who published the book.
Griffin’s book recounts the recovery of memories of being sexually assaulted in middle school and high school by a teacher referred to as “Mr. Mason.” However, Jane Doe is contesting this narrative, citing instances from the book that she claims happened to her, not Griffin. The teacher described in enough detail in the book was reportedly identifiable to many in Amarillo, Texas, where Griffin and the classmate grew up.
Both Griffin’s lawyer and Jane Doe’s legal representation have issued statements regarding the lawsuit. Griffin’s lawyer, Thomas A. Clare, looks forward to addressing the claims in court, while Jane Doe’s lawyer expresses confidence in the legal grounds for relief under privacy law.
In light of these allegations, it is crucial to remember the significance of consent and privacy in sharing personal stories. If you or someone you know has experienced sexual assault, help is available 24/7 through RAINN’s National Sexual Assault Hotline at 1-800-656-4673.
Observing the unfolding legal battle, it becomes evident that the power of storytelling must always be wielded with caution and respect for others’ experiences.
