Mixed Reactions to “The Mandalorian and Grogu” Movie as Rotten Tomatoes Scores Roll In

As the highly anticipated brand-new Star Wars movie “The Mandalorian and Grogu” prepares to make its debut in theaters on May 22 (with early showings available on May 21), early reviews have started to roll in. The current Rotten Tomatoes scores indicate that not everyone may love this latest installment in the beloved franchise.

After a long hiatus from new theatrical releases in the Star Wars universe, fans were eager to see how “The Mandalorian and Grogu” would be received. The most recent film, “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker,” released in 2019, did not fare well with critics either, with a Rotten Tomatoes score of just 51%.

Despite the focus on two of Star Wars’ most beloved characters, Din Djarin and Grogu, the critic score for “The Mandalorian and Grogu” is currently sitting at 61% on Rotten Tomatoes. While this score may fluctuate as more reviews come in, early reactions have been mixed.

Reviews for the movie range from fairly positive to scathing. Tessa Smith from Mama’s Geeky stated that she felt “underwhelmed” by the movie, describing it as feeling more like a TV arc than a big-screen spectacle. Another review from Hoai-Tran Bui at Inverse compared the film to a series of cutscenes from a video game, suggesting a lack of cohesion in the storytelling.

Owen Gleiberman at Variety echoed similar sentiments, noting that “The Mandalorian and Grogu” feels like a couple of likable episodes strung together rather than a cohesive cinematic experience. The shift from the small screen to the big screen may not have translated as smoothly as some had hoped.

As audience scores have yet to be tallied, it remains to be seen whether viewers will have a more positive reaction to “The Mandalorian and Grogu.” Despite the mixed critical reception, the allure of the Star Wars universe is sure to draw fans to theaters to judge for themselves whether this latest installment lives up to the hype.
