Ken Olin: From Thirtysomething Star to Loving Grandfather

Ken Olin, known for his role as Michael Steadman on the ’80s hit show Thirtysomething, has aged gracefully into grandparenthood. Despite not resembling his former on-screen character, Olin, now 71, seems to be enjoying this new chapter in life.

In the ensemble series Thirtysomething, Olin starred alongside Mel Harris, Polly Draper, Peter Horton, Patricia Wettig, Melanie Mayron, and Timothy Busfield from 1987 to 1991. His character, Michael, was a stabilizing force throughout the show, navigating parenthood and careers alongside his on-screen wife, Hope, played by Harris.

Fast forward to 2026, and Olin is still active in the industry, but now also relishing in his role as a grandfather. With long gray hair and a white beard, the actor, director, and producer recently shared a heartwarming photo snuggling a puppy with his grandson on Instagram.

In a sweet throwback post on Valentine’s Day this year, Olin shared the story of how he met his real-life wife and Thirtysomething co-star, Patricia Wettig, back in 1982. The couple, who have been married since then and have two children together, still exude a sense of enduring love.

Following the conclusion of Thirtysomething in 1991, Olin transitioned from acting to directing and producing. His career behind the camera has included work on shows like Alias, Brothers & Sisters, and This is Us. Most recently, he has been involved in directing episodes of the popular action drama series Tracker.

Olin’s journey from beloved ’80s TV star to successful director and loving grandfather showcases his versatility and longevity in the entertainment industry. It’s clear that he continues to find fulfillment in both his personal and professional life, making a lasting impact on those around him.
