Travelers are up in arms after American Airlines quietly introduced new baggage fees and stricter restrictions—changes that caught many off guard. Frustrated passengers took to social media to express their outrage, calling the updates “ridiculous” and “yet another way to charge more.” Some are even reconsidering their future travel plans. The once simple act of flying has now become more complicated and potentially more costly, leaving passengers scrambling to understand the changes before their next flight.
The updated policy impacts everything from the cost of checking a bag to stricter guidelines on carry-on luggage sizes, surprising even seasoned travelers. While airlines have been steadily raising fees in recent years, many passengers feel that this latest move by American Airlines is a tipping point, especially as travel demand increases for spring and summer vacations.
Beyond changes to baggage fees, the updates also distinguish Basic Economy fares from standard Main Cabin offerings. According to a statement released by the airline on Thursday, April 9, these changes are a result of ongoing pricing evaluations and the current operational environment.
For tickets booked on or after the communication date, the new bag fees for domestic flights, including to Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Canada, and short-haul international flights are as follows: $50 for the first checked bag, $60 for the second, and $200 for the third if purchased at the airport.
Booking the cheapest flights will now come with additional fees, including a $5 charge per bag for domestic Basic Economy tickets. Prepaying online or through the AA app can save a few dollars, but travelers are expressing dissatisfaction with the price hikes and ever-changing inconveniences associated with travel services.
In the comments section of an Instagram post by The Points Guy, individuals shared their unfiltered thoughts on the situation. Some expressed disappointment in the lack of competition between airlines and the continuous price increases.
Despite the rising prices and changes to seating policies, the airline assures that its VIP customers will still receive certain benefits. AAdvantage status members will continue to receive complimentary bags on American Airlines flights, and most AAdvantage credit cardholders will also get their first eligible checked bag free on domestic itineraries.
Premium seat holders on domestic and international flights, as well as active-duty U.S. military personnel on all American flights, will also maintain complimentary bag privileges.
