Because I Said So

The romantic comedy film “Because I Said So” may have boasted an impressive cast, including the late Diane Keaton and Mandy Moore, but its storyline left much to be desired.

In the late 1990s and early 2000s, a time known as the Y2K era, audiences were treated to a plethora of beloved romantic comedies. However, among these gems, one movie stood out for all the wrong reasons, earning the harsh label of the “worst romantic comedy of all time.”

Rotten Tomatoes, a well-known online review aggregation website, recently released a list of 35 romantic comedy films considered to be the worst, with “Because I Said So” claiming the number one spot. Critics panned the film for being “overly reliant on caricatures and lacking any human insight,” labeling it as “an unfunny, cliche-ridden mess.”

With a measly 3 percent score on the Tomatometer from professional critics, “Because I Said So” failed to impress. However, audiences were slightly more forgiving, giving the film a 65 percent score on the Popcornmeter, indicating that while watchable, it still had noticeable flaws that prevented it from becoming a fan favorite.

Among other films listed as the “worst romantic comedy of all time” by Rotten Tomatoes are titles like “Down to You,” “Saving Sara,” and “Material Girls.”

Directed by Michael Lehmann, known for his work on the cult classic “Heathers,” “Because I Said So” centers on a mother’s struggle to let go of her adult daughters. Diane Keaton stars as Daphne Wilder, a mother of three daughters played by Lauren Graham, Piper Perabo, and Mandy Moore.

In a previous interview, Moore shared her experiences working with Keaton, admitting that she was initially nervous but ultimately found her co-star to be incredibly supportive and comforting on set.

Aside from the stellar cast, which also includes Gabriel Macht as Milly’s love interest, “Because I Said So” failed to live up to the expectations set by other romantic comedies of its time.

In a world filled with timeless romantic comedies, “Because I Said So” serves as a reminder of the importance of a compelling storyline and well-developed characters in capturing the hearts of audiences.
