Have you ever found yourself rushing through an airport, wrestling with a suitcase that seems to have a mind of its own? The suitcase might be fishtailing, tipping, or straining your wrist, but the issue might not be your strength – it could be your technique.
Recently, I had the opportunity to sit down with Juan Phillips, VP of Design and Innovation at Travelpro, to uncover the “physics of travel.” Surprisingly, many of us are handling our four-wheel spinner bags in a way that actually contributes to the fatigue we’re trying to avoid.
Here are three design secrets that professionals use to effortlessly navigate the terminal:
1. The “Pinky Test” for Your Wheels
According to Phillips, the biggest mistake travelers make is “dragging” a four-wheel bag behind them like an old-school upright. This technique puts unnecessary torque on your shoulder. High-end luggage is designed for neutral-gravity movement, meaning the bag should do all the work.
The fix? You should be able to guide your bag right next to you using just your pinky finger. If you find yourself struggling to keep the bag straight, check the wheel alignment. Many professional-grade wheels have internal magnets that self-align when the bag is kept vertical and close to your hip.
2. Stop Grabbing the Center of the Handle
Take a closer look at your suitcase handle. Instead of grabbing it dead-center, look for the contoured palm pads on the sides. Pushing from the center creates a pivot point that makes the bag harder to control. By using the side pads, you can transfer energy from your core rather than straining your wrist or forearm.
3. The “Softside” Compression Hack
In the debate between hardside and softside luggage, many opt for hardside for the sleek look. However, if you tend to overpack, softside luggage might be the way to go. Softside bags made of high-denier fabric can compress into overhead bins more effectively, even when expanded. Additionally, softside bags with external pockets allow for easy storage of last-minute items without making the bag too bulky to fit in sizers.
In the world of travel, mastering these design secrets can make your journeys smoother and more enjoyable.
