Eileen Gu: The Most Decorated Female Freestyle Skier in Olympic History

Eileen Gu has captured the online world’s attention for multiple reasons. Not only is she the most decorated female freestyle skier in Olympic history, having secured two silver medals at the 2026 Winter Olympics, but she’s also become a viral sensation due to her remarkable response to a reporter’s question.

At a press conference following her second-place finish in freeski slopestyle on Feb. 16, a male reporter posed a rather controversial question to Gu, asking her whether she saw her finishes as two silvers gained or two golds lost. This question did not sit well with many online, but Gu handled it with grace and confidence. With a laugh, she responded, “I’m the most decorated female freeskier in history, I think that’s an answer in and of itself.”

The 22-year-old continued to assert her dominance, stating, “Winning a medal at the Olympics is a life-changing experience for every athlete. Doing it five times is exponentially harder.” Gu also dismissed the notion of the “two medals lost situation,” emphasizing that she is showcasing her best skiing and achieving feats that have never been done before.

The response from Gu garnered widespread praise, with many applauding her for her confident demeanor and witty retort. The Skimm, a popular daily newsletter, highlighted the moment, urging others to normalize laughing in the face of ridiculous questions and declaring Gu as truly worthy of admiration.

While some came to the defense of the reporter, suggesting that he was simply trying to understand Gu’s mindset following her performance, the overall sentiment online was overwhelmingly supportive of Gu’s perspective.

In addition to her silver medals, Gu has an impressive career tally of two golds from Beijining 2022 and three silvers, one from Beijing and two from Milano Cortina. She is set to compete for her third medal at the Milano Cortina Games in freeski halfpipe.

Gu’s recent decision to compete for China instead of the U.S. has sparked discussions, with Vice President J.D. Vance expressing his hope that athletes who benefited from the U.S. education system and freedoms would choose to represent the country.

As the daughter of a first-generation Chinese immigrant in the U.S., Gu’s choice to represent China at the 2022 Beijing Winter Games adds another layer of complexity to her already impressive career.
