The Lasting Legacy of “I’m a Believer”

In 1967, a single song made waves, not just topping the charts, but becoming the best-selling single of the entire year. Over three decades later, it resurfaced on the charts once again. “I’m a Believer,” performed by The Monkees, claimed the spot as the number one song of 1967 and ultimately sold over 10 million copies worldwide, cementing its place as the band’s greatest commercial success. Surprisingly, the smash hit was not written by any of The Monkees, but by Neil Diamond.

Released at the end of 1966, “I’m a Believer” quickly soared to number one on the Billboard Hot 100, holding its position for seven weeks. By the end of 1967, it had solidified itself as the top-selling single of the year, contributing to The Monkees’ status as a pop culture phenomenon. Despite their struggles for creative control in the early years, the song became one of their defining tracks and remains a recognizable pop classic of the 1960s.

In 2001, “I’m a Believer” found a new audience when Smash Mouth recorded a version for the animated film Shrek. The cover re-entered the Top 10, giving the song a second chance on the charts 35 years after its original release. While Smash Mouth’s rendition peaked at number 25 on the Billboard Hot 100, it reached number 4 on the Adult Pop chart, introducing the song to a new generation of fans.

Now 80 years old and the last surviving member of The Monkees, Micky Dolenz continues to perform the band’s biggest hits on tour. He emphasizes the importance of staying true to the original arrangements and delivering each song in its entirety, without any alterations or medleys. Dolenz’s dedication to the music reflects his ongoing love for performing these timeless classics.

Looking back, Dolenz appreciates the enduring quality of The Monkees’ songs and the talented writers behind them, including Carole King and Neil Diamond. More than 50 years later, “I’m a Believer” remains the band’s standout track, defining the music scene of 1967 and standing the test of time as a beloved hit.
