Remembering Alice in Chains: The Resurgence of the Legendary Band’s Final Album

The ’90s saw the rise of some of the most legendary musicians, many of whom are no longer with us today. From Kurt Cobain to Chris Cornell to Scott Weiland to Mark Lanegan, the music world continues to mourn these immense losses.

One such rock icon, Layne Staley of Alice in Chains, passed away in 2002. However, his music lives on, with the band’s last album featuring Staley back on the charts.

Alice in Chains’ self-titled third album from 1995 recently made waves on multiple Billboard charts thanks to a surge in sales after a highly anticipated vinyl reissue. The record almost reached the top spot on the competitive Vinyl Albums chart in the US but ultimately landed at #2, just behind the Stranger Things 5 soundtrack.

The album, often nicknamed “Three-Legged Dog” or “The Dog Album” due to its cover art, saw a staggering 9,400% increase in sales following the reissue. This marks the band’s fifth top 10 appearance on the Vinyl Albums chart, joining the likes of Dirt, Jar of Flies, Rainier Fog, and the Sap EP.

In a 2018 interview with Vice, guitarist Jerry Cantrell reflected on the band’s third album, describing it as a “sad” record that captures a band on the brink of falling apart. He noted its exploratory and meandering nature, hinting at the underlying struggles that ultimately led to the band’s dissolution.

The resurgence of Alice in Chains’ final album with Layne Staley at the helm serves as a poignant reminder of the band’s lasting impact on the music world. Their music continues to resonate with fans old and new, ensuring that their legacy will endure for years to come.
