As winter settles in, cozy nights call for comfort foods like crispy tater tots. But a recent recall of two beloved frozen potato products has left consumers on edge, with worries of foreign body contamination looming.
Over 21,000 cases of Ore-Ida Tater Tots and 17,000 cases of Sysco Imperial Potato Taters have been pulled from shelves in more than half of the United States, after clear hard plastic fragments were discovered in the products.
McCain Foods USA Inc, the parent company, took swift action to voluntarily recall the potentially tainted tots. While the exact cause of the contamination remains a mystery, there have been no reported cases of illness or injury from consuming the affected products.
To determine if your tots are impacted, look for clear, unlabeled poly bags within the cases. Ore-Ida tater tots with the item number OIF00215A and batch codes 1005479808 are at risk, as are Sysco products with item number 1000006067 and batch codes 1005482717.
These recalled products were distributed to 26 states, so it’s important to check your freezer if you reside in AK, AZ, CA, CO, FL, or any of the other affected states.
While foreign body contamination can pose health risks like potential physical damage, choking hazards, or infection, the FDA has designated this recall as Class II. This means the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote, offering some reassurance to consumers.
In a time when food recalls are becoming more common, staying informed about product safety is essential. With winter in full swing, it’s a good reminder to check your freezer for any potentially impacted items. Stay safe and enjoy your favorite comfort foods responsibly.
