Ian Gillan of Deep Purple Faces Uncertain Future

Frontman of the iconic rock band Deep Purple, Ian Gillan, recently hinted at the possibility of retirement despite his upcoming European tour in 2026. In a candid interview with Uncut, the legendary singer, who is now 80 years old, disclosed that his vision has significantly declined, leading to doubts about his ability to continue performing. With only 30 percent vision left, Gillan expressed the challenges he faces, stating, “That won’t get better. It makes life mysterious.”

Struggling to use his laptop due to his limited vision, Gillan shared that he now relies on peripheral sight. Despite adapting to the situation, he acknowledged the exhausting nature of the process, noting, “But it’s achingly tiresome. It takes a long time to do the work.” The rock icon also reflected on the possibility of retiring if he feels his energy levels dropping, expressing a desire not to be a burden to his bandmates or fans, stating, “I don’t want to be an embarrassment to anyone.”

Having been part of Deep Purple since 1969, Gillan’s impact on the band is undeniable, with hits like “Smoke on the Water,” “Highway Star,” and “Space Truckin’” being a testament to his talent. Despite briefly leaving the band in the 1970s, Gillan made a successful comeback in the 1980s and has since continued to mesmerize audiences with his powerful vocals. In a 2017 interview with Antihero magazine, Gillan expressed his love for touring, citing it as a source of energy and intellectual stimulation.

As he approaches his 80th birthday, Gillan is aware that his time on the road may soon come to an end. Reflecting on the future, he emphasized the importance of maintaining a high level of performance and energy, sharing, “As soon as you start feeling unable to deliver at that [high] level, that’s when it’s time to stop.” Despite the challenges he faces, Gillan remains optimistic and dedicated to giving his best to his fans until the end.

Deep Purple’s upcoming European tour, “Mad In Europe,” includes stops in Japan, Norway, France, Germany, Spain, and Italy, showcasing the band’s enduring legacy and Gillan’s unwavering commitment to his music. As the rock icon navigates the uncertainties of his health and career, one thing remains certain – his passion for performing and connecting with audiences will always shine through.
