Deta Hedman Faces Backlash Over Refusal to Play Transgender Dart Player

British darts player Deta Hedman faced backlash yet again after withdrawing from a tournament due to refusing to play against trans rival Noa-Lynn van Leuven. This marks the second time in 18 months that Hedman has chosen to forfeit a match against a transgender opponent.

Van Leuven, who transitioned in 2021, has faced intense scrutiny and online abuse for competing against cisgender women. Despite this, she made history by becoming the first transgender player to qualify for the World Championships. The Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) has defended its policy on transgender players, with chief executive Matthew Porter stating that they stand by their inclusive approach.

Van Leuven expressed frustration, emphasising that there should be no advantage in darts based on gender. She highlighted the online hate she received, leading to panic and anxiety attacks. However, she found support from allies and a community rallying behind her.

Former world champion Luke Humphries showed support for Van Leuven, wishing her well in her career. The ongoing debate surrounding transgender inclusion in darts continues to spark conversation and controversies within the sport.
