A New York City doctor named Zhi Alan Cheng has been sentenced to 24 years in prison for sexually assaulting women, some of whom were his sedated patients. His crimes were discovered when a victim found videos of the assaults, leading to a police investigation and his subsequent arrest. Cheng pleaded guilty to multiple charges and will have to register as a sex offender.
The District Attorney praised the survivors who came forward and helped bring Cheng to justice. Despite facing a possible life sentence if convicted at trial, Cheng accepted a plea deal. Some criticized the sentencing as too lenient, questioning why someone who committed such heinous acts could potentially rebuild their life.
Cheng’s crimes were extensive, with over 50 charges relating to the assault of seven women. The abuse took place in his apartment and at the hospital where he worked as a gastroenterologist. Videos found by authorities showed him abusing unconscious patients who had been sedated by him, highlighting the disturbing nature of his actions.
