11 Rules for Your Elf on the Shelf

‘Tis the season for decking the halls, baking gingerbread cookies, and of course, welcoming a special ‘Elf on the Shelf’ into your home. Whether you’re adding another Scout Elf to your family this winter or diving into the Elf game for the first time, it’s crucial to know the dos and don’ts that come with having one of Santa’s cute helpers under your roof.

To ensure you seamlessly adjust to your holiday houseguest, we’ve compiled a list of the most important Elf on the Shelf rules. From the date your Elf will arrive, to their hiding spots, to their job while they’re there, and the one rule you must NEVER break—there’s a lot you need to keep in mind.

1. No Set Date for Your Elf’s Arrival
Your Elf can make their grand entrance whenever they want between “Elf Return Week” of November 24 to December 1. And don’t worry if yours is fashionably late—it’s all part of the fun.

2. He/She Needs a Name
Your Scout Elf must be named to be granted their magic. Gather your family and choose a name that embodies their mischievous and fun spirit.

3. Elves Must Constantly Move Around
Your Elf loves to roam and can show up in various spots each day, so keep your eyes peeled. From building an igloo in the freezer to taking Barbie’s pink convertible for a ride, the mischief knows no bounds.

4. Elves Can’t Move During the Day
Your Elf only shifts locations at night when the kids are asleep. They keep a watchful eye during the day, so behave accordingly.

5. Each Night, Elves Report Back to Santa
Your Elf spreads the word to Santa every night, so make sure your little ones are on their best behavior.

6. Elves Need To Be Moved Each Night
After reporting to Santa, your Elf prefers new hiding spots to keep things exciting.

7. Elves Always Have a Good Reason If They Don’t Move
If your Elf seems glued to the same spot, rest assured there’s a mischievous reason behind it.

8. Elves Cannot Be Touched
Handle with care because touching causes them to lose their magic. Only parents can touch them when necessary, so keep those hands off.

9. An Elf’s Magical Powers Can Be Restored
Accidents happen, but fear not—Santa, cinnamon, or a Christmas carol can revive their magic.

10. Elves Cannot Talk to Humans
While they may be silent, they’re always listening and passing along gift ideas to Santa.

11. Elves Must Leave on Christmas Eve
Before the clock strikes midnight on December 24, your Elf flies back to the North Pole, job done for another year.

Incorporate these Elf on the Shelf rules seamlessly into your holiday season for some extra Christmas magic.
