Cheryl Ann Tweedy was born on June 30, 1983, in Newcastle upon Tyne, England. She grew up on council estates in the suburbs of Walker and Heaton. Her parents, Joan Callaghan and Garry Tweedy, separated when she was 11.

Cheryl was married to footballer Ashley Cole from 2006 to 2010. She then married French restaurateur Jean-Bernard Fernandez-Versini in 2014, but their marriage ended in 2016. Cheryl had a high-profile relationship with Liam Payne, with whom she has a son, Bear, born in March 2017. They separated in July 2018.
