Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni Signs Anti-LGBTQ Bill Into Law

Yoweri Museveni, the president of Uganda, has signed into law one of the harshest anti-LGBTQ legislation in the world. The bill criminalizes homosexual activity and mandates a death sentence for those who commit “aggravated homosexuality,” which includes incest, intercourse with a minor or intercourse while HIV-positive.

The measure criminalizes the act of hiding crucial information about people who are accused of committing aggravated homosexuality. It also prohibits providing sexual education to individuals who identify as LGBT. Additionally, it promotes the use of conversion therapy as a form of “rehabilitation” for LGBT offenders who are widely condemned.

Earlier this year, President Museveni reintroduced a bill to Parliament for revisions.

Henry Mukiibi, an advocate for Uganda’s LGBTQ community, expressed concern to CNN that with the signing of the bill, people may act based on their own laws, causing harm to the community. He added that they were not ready for this and expected the bill to have been stopped. There is now panic about what will happen next as people may start attacking members of the community once the bill is signed.
