Sinitta, born Sinitta Malone on October 19, 1963, in Seattle, Washington, is a British-American pop singer and television personality.

Known for her chart-topping hits in the 1980s such as ‘So Macho,’ ‘Toy Boy,’ ‘Cross My Broken Heart,’ and ‘Right Back Where We Started From,’ she also became a prominent figure on British television, particularly as a judge on ‘The X Factor’ UK from 2004 to 2013. 

With her captivating presence and talent, Sinitta has maintained a versatile career in both music and television. Now aged 60, she remains an influential figure in the entertainment industry.

Early Life

Sinitta was born into a musically inclined family. Her mother, Miquel Brown, was a famous Canadian disco-soul singer in the 1970s and 1980s, and her father was Anthony Malone. 

She has a sister, Gretta, who a relative adopted. Between Seattle and Detroit, Sinitta often traveled with her mother on tour, including visits to Sydney and other cities. 

Her exposure to the entertainment world began early, leading her to attend a boarding school in East Sussex and, later, a ballet school in Tunbridge Wells at 9. Her early passion for performance landed her a role in ‘The Wiz’ at age 12, marking the beginning of her journey in the performing arts.

Career

Sinitta made her film debut in 1981 as Frankie in Shock Treatment, credited as Sinitta Renet. She continued to build her stage career by appearing in several West End productions, including the original production of Cats and Little Shop of Horrors. 

Her first taste of musical success came in 1986 when she released her debut single, ‘So Macho,’ which became a significant hit in the UK and reached number 2 on the charts. 

She followed up with singles like ‘Toy Boy’ and ‘Cross My Broken Heart,’ both of which enjoyed chart success in the UK and internationally. Her debut album, Sinitta!, was released in 1987 and performed moderately on the charts.

In 1989, Sinitta released her second album, Wicked, which featured hits such as ‘Right Back Where We Started From.’ The single reached number 4 in the UK and became her highest-charting song in Australia and New Zealand. 

She also released ‘Love on a Mountain Top,’ charted in the UK, and ‘Hitchin’ a Ride,’ which reached the UK Top 20. Throughout the 1990s, Sinitta continued to release music, including covers of classic songs like ‘Shame Shame Shame’ and an EP of Supremes covers, maintaining her presence in the pop scene.

In 2004, Sinitta transitioned to television, appearing on The X Factor as Simon Cowell’s assistant during the Judges’ Houses stage, a role she reprised multiple times throughout the series. Her involvement in selecting acts such as Leona Lewis and One Direction solidified her importance in the show. 

Sinitta also appeared on other TV programs, such as Grease Is the Word, Loose Women, and I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! Her television presence continued well into the 2010s, appearing on Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway and Up Late with Rylan.

Personal Life

In 2002, Sinitta married Andy Willner, but the couple divorced in 2010. Despite her fame, she has adopted three children and has largely kept her personal life private. Her family and relationships, however, have often been a topic of interest in the media, especially about her close friendship with Simon Cowell.

Sinitta’s influence extends beyond her musical and television careers. She has appeared on various reality shows, and her role as a mentor on The X Factor helped shape some of the biggest names in the music industry. 

Now in her 60s, Sinitta continues to make occasional media appearances, remaining a beloved figure in British pop culture.
