Early Life
Betty Brosmer spent her early years in Carmel before moving to Los Angeles when she turned ten. Brosmer, petite and stocky, began her weight training and bodybuilding program as a teenager.

She had a strong athletic background and was seen as a “tomboy” growing up. Her early success in sports is thanks to her father’s encouragement of her love of sports.

At thirteen, Brosmer had already appeared in the Sears & Roebuck catalog. Her aunt took her to a professional photography studio in New York City the following year, and she ended up selling one of her images to Emerson Televisions for their commercial advertising. The resulting ad ran in national magazines for years.
Relationship
Betty and Canadian bodybuilder and entrepreneur Joe Weider tied the knot on April 24, 1961. The lovers had crossed paths in the years following Brosmer’s 1956 debut in Weider magazine. Reportedly, Weider was so taken with Brosmer’s work that he insisted on collaborating with her, frequently praising her as an inspiration. They eventually became closer as they shared interests in fitness and psychology.

When Weider and Betty met, he was still married to Hedwiges Uzar. Brosmer and Weider were able to tie the knot following the couple’s 1960 divorce, which came after they had a daughter, Lydia Ross.

The Weiders, Betty Brosmer, and Weider started writing books about bodybuilding together in 1981 with The Weider Book of Bodybuilding for Women. They later contributed significantly to developing the International Federation of Bodybuilders (IFBB) in 1984.

While Brosmer and Weider had no children together, they were married for over half a century. Weider passed away on March 23, 2013, when he was 93.
