{"id":531,"date":"2024-06-24T05:26:56","date_gmt":"2024-06-24T05:26:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/urbanwomanmag.com\/africa\/?p=531"},"modified":"2024-06-24T05:26:59","modified_gmt":"2024-06-24T05:26:59","slug":"why-a-nigerian-woman-chioma-okoli-faces-jail-time-for-reviewing-tomato-puree","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/urbanwomanmag.com\/africa\/why-a-nigerian-woman-chioma-okoli-faces-jail-time-for-reviewing-tomato-puree\/","title":{"rendered":"Why a Nigerian Woman, Chioma Okoli Faces Jail Time for Reviewing Tomato Puree"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap wp-block-paragraph\">A Nigerian woman, Chioma Okoli, shared a review of Nagiko tomato puree she purchased at a street market in Sangotedo, Lagos, via her Facebook page on September 16, 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She mentioned that it had a sweeter taste compared to other brands and asked her followers for their thoughts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The post sparked various opinions, leading to a heated discussion among users.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cStop spoiling my brother&#8217;s product, if [you] don\u2019t like it, use another one than bring it to social media\u201d, a user wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She replied, \u201cHelp me advise your brother to stop ki**ing people with his product\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shortly after she was arrested by two men and a woman in plain clothes who claimed to be police officers, she recounted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They took her to the Ogudu police station. The 39-year-old, who is pregnant with her fourth child, has been trapped in a legal battle ever since, accused of a cybercrime punishable by up to three years in prison and a fine of seven million Nigerian naira.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Can product reviews be a cybercrime?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nigeria\u2019s Cybercrime Act was fast-tracked through Parliament in May 2015 and became the country\u2019s first legislation to specifically deal with cybercrime-related offences, such as cyberbullying, online fraud, and unlawful activities carried out on social media by an individual or groups with malicious intent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Whether or not Okoli has committed such a crime has divided public opinion.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Okoli has received support from many people who consider Erisco to be a \u2018corporate bully\u2019 and suggest boycotting it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet there is no consensus on the difference between a product review and a cybercrime, or what might be considered an excessive abuse of power by a company or the police.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A Nigerian woman, Chioma Okoli, shared a review of Nagiko tomato puree she purchased at a street market in Sangotedo, Lagos, via her Facebook page on September 16, 2023.
